The Bison Feast + Fest is just one of the many programs the PTO is

Hundreds of Beachwood families came together to celebrate
Beachwood's cultural diversity during an end of the year event,
sponsored by the Beachwood Schools PTO. Dozens of families
provided traditional family recipes while student groups performed
song and dance from around the world. High School students led
the younger students through international arts and crafts, like
origami and Henna tattoos. Participants were invited to pose in front
of a green screen and choose from famous sites around the globe
like the Taj Mahal, London's Big Ben and the Great Wall of China.
There was also an interactive Community Art Project, sponsored by
the Beachwood Federation of Teachers, which will be displayed at
the Board of Education office building during the next school year.
The Bison Feast + Fest was chaired by Beachwood parents Vritika
Krishnan, Jamie Hardis, Julie Felder and Donna Houston-Brown
and Beachwood High School Spanish teacher Daria Cayne. More
than 100 teachers, parents and students volunteered to ensure the
day was successful.
Congratulations go to Beachwood Middle School's 8th grade
Destination Imagination team of Adam Charnas, Max Steiger,
and Jordyn Zawatsky, who won 2nd place in the Destination
Imagination Global Finals tournament held at the University of
Tennessee in May. Over 17,000 youth participated from 21 different
countries.
The team won first place at the regional tournament in March,
held at Beachwood High School. Next, they won 3rd place at the
State tournament in Mount Vernon, OH in April, which qualified
them to compete at the Global Finals. Teammates Gabe
Colmenares and Jack Brewer helped lead the team to victory at
Regionals and States, but were unable to attend the Global
tournament. Competing against 72 other teams from around the
US and the world, the 3-person team brought home silver medals
and a 2nd place trophy, setting a record for Beachwood's DI
program.
"This is a huge accomplishment for our middle school team, for
Beachwood's Destination Imagination program, and for Beachwood
City Schools," said Beachwood's Destination Imagination
Coordinator, Shelly Lewis. "It is something that has never been
achieved before, and what an honor for our community to be
recognized on an international stage."

"We have had teams place in the top ten before," Lewis added, "but
never in the top three. This team was determined to compete,
persevered to succeed without two of their teammates, and
performed their hearts out."
Destination Imagination is an international organization that
empowers youth to change the world through teamwork, creativity,
and problem solving. Students ranging from kindergarten through
college form teams all over the world to compete against each other
in scientific, robotic, structural, theatrical, and service learning
challenges. Each year, 150,000 youth participate in the program. In
Ohio alone, 735 teams of youth competed in the 2015-2016 season.
Beachwood had 16 teams representing kindergarten through
eleventh grade participate in the program this year.

Congratulations to Hannah Kahn, Mia Knight, Ashaunti Griffin
and Katelyn Perryman who are the reigning state champions in
the 4x100 relay with a time of 48.45. Teammate Leah Roter was
4th in state in the 3,200 meter run, breaking a school record with
a time of 11 minutes and 3 seconds.
